News from the Office - December 2011

Important Safety Reminders

Yard Supervision
Yard Supervision for Grades JK to 6 begins at 8:35 AM and ends at 3:45 PM. Afternoon Kindergarten supervision begins at 12:45 PM. Parents are responsible for their children’s safety and conduct in the yard before and after these times.

Visitor Sign-In Book
Visitors are requested to sign in at the main office and wear a ‘visitor sticker’. This is a safety measure to ensure that visiting adults are recognized and encouraged to feel welcome in our school. Thank You!

Kiss N' Ride
Do not use the Avenue Road driveway as this is the school bus pick up and drop off area for our students.
Please pick up and drop of your children at the Kiss N’ Ride designated area on Poplar Plains.

Community Issue
Our neighbours have recently been concerned about cars blocking their driveways during drop off and pickup times. Please ensure that you are not parking in front of anyone's driveway, as they need to be able to get in and out of their own driveway safely and promptly.

There is one-hour parking on Balmoral in the event that you have to come into the school. We do everything we can to cooperate with our neighbours and would appreciate this is taken into consideration.

Safe Arrival Program
The Safe Arrival program is used by parents/guardians and schools to account for any student’s unexplained failure to arrive at school.  Please call the school safe arrival number 416-393-1557 before 8:55 AM or 12:30 PM (for an afternoon absence) if your child will not be attending school or plans to be late.  This line is available 24 hours a day with voice mail.  If your child is absent and we have not heard from you, we will make every effort to contact you using the information provided on the Emergency Form.  The name and telephone number of an emergency contact is absolutely essential.

Preserving the Learning Environment - from the Office Staff

In the event of an emergency, we always do our utmost to relay messages to students; however, we will not disrupt classes and interrupt instruction time to give messages to individual students. Our Office Administrator, Dorothy Hunt and Clerical, Lisa Burk are very busy during the day. To minimize the numerous phone calls they are currently receiving, we kindly ask for your cooperation to Please make arrangements for special pick-ups prior to your child’s coming to school. The agenda is an excellent tool for communication between home and school for dental and medical appointments when your child needs to leave early.

Letters are required to our office staff to notify us that your child is leaving the school early for an appointment or other matter.  Parents who are picking students up must sign out the student at the office. Please help us with this process and make this a best practice at Brown P.S.

Swim Attire
Many students are forgetting their swim gear and having to call home. This is another disruption for the office staff and to instruction time.  Please check your child’s timetable and ensure they have their swim attire on a regular basis.  Possibly send the swim attire a day before the actual swimming class.

Hallway Safety

We kindly ask that parents and caregivers drop off their children in the school yard as a best practice and allow the students to go to their classrooms on their own upon the entry bell. Our hallways are narrow and when too many people congregate in the hallways, it creates a great deal of congestion. To ensure the safety of our students, please help us make this a best practice also.

Reminder
BRRR!  It's COLD outside!  With the arrival of cold weather, we are requesting that parents ensure that children are dressed properly for the weather, which means wearing hats, mittens or gloves, scarves, snow pants and boots.  We also request that you take a few moments to review the reasons for wearing (not just bringing to school!) warm clothing in winter.  Please make sure that all clothing and belongings are labeled with your child's name, as this allows us to identify clothing that has made its way to the Lost and Found.  Also, please make sure that your child has a pair of shoes that can be worn inside (but that are not worn outside) while boots are left outside the classroom to dry. This ensures that carpets in classrooms stay dry, and helps to eliminate slippery floors.
Lost & Found
Parents, please check our lost and found collection. There are many items currently in the Lost and Found area that need to be recovered before the holidays.  Remember to label items (esp. lunch bags) with a permanent marker.

Principal’s Message from the Office of G. Christakis & S. Litner

Thank you to all for an incredible Fall Fling. Big thanks to the organizing committee, parents, staff and students who participated this year in making the event a true community success. Our staff and students are currently working with our Outreach Committee to create holiday hampers for families that need some help during this season. We kindly appreciate all the donations and generosity from our community to help those who are less fortunate.

December is a busy month at Brown P.S.  The TDSB has invited students to the Q- Mack presentation The Ultimate Class Trip on December 14 at the Ricoh Coliseum- It's all in the name of paying tribute to the TDSB's Character Development initiative and the important issue of tackling bullying head-on. The Ultimate Class Trip is open to all students from Grades 2 to 8 and will feature Q-Mack, Canada's best basketball trickster and an incredible entertainer. We have most of our grade 3-6 classes attending.  Our primary students will have the opportunity to attend The Ultimate Class Trip during the spring 2012.

This month’s Character Trait is Kindness and Caring.  We held two assemblies for our students last week discussing school expectations and the character traits. For every act of kindness and caring, students will be given a piece of construction paper to help create chains of kindness and caring throughout the school.  Our goal is to be able to link these chains of kindness and caring from the third floor all the way to the first floor.  Each link will have a student’s name on it representing their act of kindness and caring.

Empathy certificates were given to Alexander Wise and Foster Smith for their radio announcement contributions in educating our students about EMPATHY during the month of November.    Congratulations to both boys for their fine efforts.

Every Month I will include a short article offered by our TDSB guidance department about various topics. Last month I included information about Bullying Awareness. This month‘s topic is Children and Stress.

Children and Stress

“Stress can infect and affect the physical, emotional, social, intellectual and academic well-being of children.  It can interfere with their motivation, attention, perception, memory and the entire learning process.”  Dr. Harold Minden, York University suggests, children experience stress much like adults do, but we often do not recognize the contributing factors or signs.  Family situations, health problems, and an overly busy lifestyle can all cause stress in our children.

Some clues that your child may be stressed are:
  • Recurring headaches or other physical symptoms
  • Lethargic behaviour or lack of energy
  • Nervous habits such as nail biting
  • Restlessness
  • Strained facial expressions or frowns
Here are some ways parents can help children learn to manage stress:
  • Be patient.  Allow extra time for activities and preparation.
  • Physical contact helps.  Hugging helps a child to relax and builds self-esteem  at the same time.
  • Listen to your child when he/she tells you about his/her feelings. Ask questions to encourage openness and honesty.
  • Promote physical activity.  A healthy body is linked to a healthy mind.
  • Allow for quiet time.  Be sure not to over program your child.
  • Prepare healthy meals, as a balanced diet gives children needed nutrients.
  • Be consistent with your child so there are few surprises.
  • Teach your child relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and stretching.

Happy Holidays!

The staff and I wish you all a safe, restful and joyous holiday season with your family and friends.
School resumes after the holidays on Monday, January 9, 2012 at 8:50 AM.
Sincerely,
G. Christakis-Principal           S.Litner-Vice Principal

Parent Council News - Dec 2011

WHAT A FANTASTIC START TO THE YEAR!!!

Fall has been such a busy time with so many volunteers – parents, teachers and staff - all working together to make Brown School a great place for our children. A HUGE THANK YOU to all of our Committee Chairs for their hard work and dedication and all of the support of our parents and staff in our fall fundraising efforts. The Fall Fling, Wrapping Paper/Chocolate Sales and the Calendar sales were incredibly successful. Looking forward to having as much fun and success in the months to come!!  Congratulations, Brown School!

Don’t forget, there is a parent council meeting this Wednesday, December 14th at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. As always, please feel free to contact me at bernstl@lao.on.ca or Jenifer Glover at Jeniferglover@rogers.com if you are interested in participating in any of the parent council initiatives.

Lisa Bernstein, Chair

Reminder: Fall Fling Art Calendars will be available for pick-up at the Winterfest Concert.

Update on Pool & Programming Cuts
While the picture is still vague, the budget cuts proposed for 2012 include the elimination of programs at the Brown CC, however, swim programs at Brown are NOT affected at this time.   Other proposed cuts that would have impact on our neighbourhood include:

Davisville Public School: Reduction in Student Nutrition Program funding

Central Eglinton Community Centre: Staffing level reduction that will cause a reduction in programs offered to community

Deer Park Public Library – reduce the number of hours from 62 to 56 hours per week, a 6 hour reduction (equivalent to two mornings)

Northern District Public Library – reduce the number of hours from 69 to 59.5 per week, a 9.5 hour reduction (equivalent to approximately three mornings)

Forest Hill Public Library – reduce the number of hours from 62 to 56 per week, a 6 hour reduction (equivalent to two mornings) AND

Hillcrest CC - elimination of City programming including swimming

It is unclear how cuts to other programming would impact the swim programs.  It is clear however, that the proposed cuts at Brown & Hillcrest would have an incredibly negative impact on all of us. At Brown, we have enjoyed a cooperative and supportive relationship with Community Centre staff to the point where it is virtually seamless to the students as to who belongs to what.  They contribute to much of what
enriches our children's experience from coaching sports teams to helping out with Garden Fete.

The loss of Hillcrest's pool and programs would also have a widespread negative effect on all of us.  It's difficult to imagine no more Primary Swim Meets.

Three years ago when the TDSB threatened to close school pools, the community rallied.  Show your support by contacting your local Councillor, for St. Paul's Ward 22 that is Josh Matlow, and Ward 23 Joe Mihevc as well as the Budget and Executive Committee Members.

Write, Email, Call.  Get your children involved in writing letters and drawing pictures.  It's time to rally.

If you have any questions, please contact Yvonne Maclean-Howard at yvonne@maclean-howard.org

Primary Swim Team

On Friday, December 2nd, we hosted the first of the season’s "kick off" Swim meet with our sister school, Hillcrest. The following week, on December 8th, our Primary team travelled to Hillcrest pool for a fun-filled re-match!

As Coaches, we are delighted and proud of our Primary members. We feel each student has enjoyed a positive experience of being part of a Swim team. Overall, our primary members have gained the benefits of regular swimming with improved strokes, skills, endurance, speed and improved fitness levels!

We enjoyed working with your children. Thank you!

Girls' Basketball

After several early morning practices, the Girls from Brown went to a one-day tournament at Forest Hill Jr. PS. The team showed great spirit and determination! Although they lost the first two games, they pulled together to win their final game of the day. Congrats to all the Girls on a good day of Basketball. Thanks to all the parents for their support at the tournament.

Boys' Volleyball (Grade 6)

The Gr. 6 Boys’ Volleyball team had a great, albeit brief, season.  We showed tremendous improvement in all areas and a number of players developed excellent overhand serves.  On the strength of our serving, we managed to squeak into the playoffs against Don Mills.  Unfortunately, a heart-breaking loss in the 3rd-game tiebreaker put an end to our championship aspirations.  Thanks to all the boys for their hard work and positive attitudes.

Message from our School Trustee - Dec 2011

From the desk of Trustee Shelley Laskin, Ward 11

Organizational Board Meeting December 1, 2011

At our Organizational Board, Trustees acclaimed Chris Bolton (Ward 10, Trinity-Spadina) as Chair and elected Shaun Chen (Ward 21, Scarborough–Rouge River) as Vice-Chair. This year I am serving on the Board’s Operations and Facility Management Committee and also on the Planning & Priorities Committee. In addition, I am a member of the Governance, Conduct & Ethics Review Committee and was appointed as a Director to the Toronto Foundation for Students Success and Alternate Director to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association. But please remember, my first priority is to my local schools… so do not hesitate to e-mail me with your comments, issues or concerns!

City of Toronto Budget Recommendations affect Ward 11 Schools
Unfortunately, it will be impossible for the TDSB to pick up the costs of the program and service reductions for our children and youth proposed by the City during their budget process. These include proposals to eliminate parks and recreation programming in Hillcrest and Brown and 10 other community centres; the cutting of permitting recreation swims at Hillcrest’s pool and 6 other school pools; elimination of childcare in schools rent subsidy which has the potential to increase childcare costs for parents; as well as proposed cuts to school nutrition programming which includes Davisville. Both our local councillors are holding community consultation sessions. Please consider attending.
  • Hold December 13th for Councillor Joe Mihevc’s (Ward 21) Budget Session (details to follow)
  • Hold January 11th for Councillor Josh Matlow’s (Ward 22) Budget Session at North Toronto Memorial Community Centre at 7pm
The City will vote on its 2012 budget in January. Unlike the City, the board does not have the ability to raise taxes… 95% of the Board’s budget comes through provincial grants and 85% of the boards budget is tied up with salaries.
The balanced budget plan for 2011-2012 included specific one-time savings and measures - essentially short-term solutions that are not ongoing and/or sustainable. The budget was balanced by using $30 million of major renewal and capital project funding to cover the cost of smaller building maintenance projects. In order to maintain our current level of programs and services in 2012-13, TDSB is projecting a serious budget shortfall. We are just beginning our own budget deliberations… more to come shortly.

Full-Day Kindergarten – City of Toronto Update
The Toronto Children’s Services staff report on Transitional Issues Impacting Toronto’s Child Care System and Recommended Actions for Mitigation was presented at the City’s Community Development and Recreation Committee on 4 November 2011 and recommendations stemming from the report will be going to City Council meeting on 29 November 2011.  Children's Services has completed an extensive analysis that, among other things, forecasts service levels and the availability of child care spaces by age group at the time of full implementation of FDELK in 2014.  Overall, the analysis shows an expected decrease in the supply of child care spaces for Junior Kindergarten (JK) and Senior Kindergarten (SK) children in child care as 4 and 5 year olds enrol in FDELK and a corresponding interest by operators in converting these vacated spaces into care for younger infants and toddlers.

A summary of the committee’s recommendations being brought forward to City Council include:

  • City Council to communicate with the Province of Ontario and the Minister of Education regarding the urgency for developing a child care stabilization and transition plan;
  • City Council to reaffirm the city’s request the Province of Ontario to provide the necessary tools and resources to support the transition (including funding);
  • Toronto Children’s Services to organize various opportunities for City Councillors and City staff to provide information and discuss relevant issues with child care providers, MPPs, Ministry staff, Toronto School Board Trustees, and School Board staff.
