The Brown Kiss 'N Ride program allows students in Grades 1-6 to be safely dropped off on Poplar Plains Blvd without being walked into the school yard by their parents. This program is staffed completely by Brown parent volunteers and helps ensure that student safety is maximized during busy school mornings.
We urgently need new volunteers to help keep the program running. All we need is 15 to 20 minutes of your time, one or two mornings a month. There’s no training required and we can work around your schedule at any time. If you would like to learn more about volunteering for this program, please email Mary Ann Stewart at maryann@floristware.com.
AFTER 4 PROGRAMS
After 4 Programs are back for Brown students! Due to space restrictions at the school this year, the After 4 Programs will have limited programs during the first and second terms. Information about the Fall programs running will be available online at www.brownschool.ca, along with more detailed program information. Registration forms will be sent home with your child soon. As always, admission will be on a first come, first serve basis. Forms will be collected daily from the box in the school office. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Kelly Trainor at trainor@rogers.com
UNICORN DAY CARE
Unicorn Day Care currently has full- and part-time care available for children 2 to 4 years of age. In addition, we have limited space in our before and after school JK/SK and School Age programs. Please feel free to contact Eric Mackey, the Day Care Director for further details at 416-929-6841.
Be sure to mark Thursday November 7th in your calendars so you can attend Brown’s major fundraiser – The Fall Fling! This is a very fun evening featuring a silent auction full of hot items donated by local vendors, the community, parents, teachers and even students. It is also a great opportunity to meet parents and staff. All money raised from the event goes directly towards fulfilling the needs of the school.
If you would like to help out gathering donations or planning the fundraiser, we’d love to have you help us. In any event, we really hope you will be able to make it to this important evening in the Brown School calendar. Keep your eyes open for more information to arrive in either the school bulletin or your child’s knapsack!
Please contact Martha McCall (mccall.marthae@gmail.com) if you would like to know more.
WORLD CHANGERS
World Changers are excited to get things rolling this Fall! We will have an introductory meeting Wednesday, September 11 at noon to talk briefly about the year ahead and particularly We Day which is happening September 20 in Toronto. We Day, an event created by Free The Children founders, Craig & Marc Kielburger, celebrates the efforts of young people trying to improve living, working and educational conditions for children in need. Participants cannot purchase tickets to We Day, they have to earn them through their service and involvement. We Day is intended to inspire, motivate and educate youth - empowering them to shift their thinking towards 'we' rather than 'me'. Brown students who are interested in attending We Day will be asked to write a letter detailing why they deserve to be chosen. Michele Breslin and Arianna Silecky will be selecting 13 children to be part of the 20,000 in attendance. For more information about We Day, check out www.weday.com/2013/08/tor-van-lineup/.
If you have any questions or would like further information, please feel free to contact Allison Fortier allisonfortier@rogers.com or Laura Finch laura.finch@me.com.
VIRTUAL LIBRARY RESOURCES
Did you know that your child can get help from their school library at home? Each school in TDSB has a Virtual Library of carefully selected digital resources to help students and teachers in their work. Some resources need a password when used outside of school. Students will receive a "Learnmark" card in September with login information.
The Virtual Library is an extension of your school library at home. It can be used for homework, research, to encourage a love of reading or just for fun. The Virtual Library is accessible from home, providing learning resources for students from K-12 allowing students to:
- search multiple age/grade/curriculum relevant resources from one location
- focus searches on one subject or many
- read fiction and nonfiction articles, books, newspapers, journals, encyclopedia etc. online
- read and listen to many resources with a read-aloud component
- watch full length videos and documentaries
- print, save, or email resources
- access content in English, French and many languages using translation features
- search by date or content type (e.g. images) and avoid distracting advertising
- link to “Just Read It” for students to post recommended book titleS
- find out what other TDSB students are reading and even win a book prize or author visit for their school.
Hope this helps!
