Sports Corner - September 2013

CROSS-COUNTRY INFORMATION
If your child wishes to participate in Cross-Country, you will find all the information you will need below. As the parent of a primary cross country runner, here is what you will be committing to:

* Parents of children in grades 1 & 2 must escort their children (or arrange for another adult to do so, not a teacher) and stay for the entire practice.  Part of the practice will take place on the field in the school playground.  A neighbourhood block near the school (bordered by Poplar Plains, Lynwood, Warren and Balmoral) will also be used as a running track.  Be prepared to help out.  For example, at least four parents will be asked to help supervise the four corners of the block.

* On the day of the meet, grades 1, 2 and 3 students must be transported by a parent or guardian.  Primary students will also need to be supervised by their parents at the park.  Junior students will return to school with the coaches by school bus.  As indicated below, the first meet takes place at Ashbridges Bay (Lakeshore & Coxwell).  The meets normally begin at 10 am with the Grade 1 Girls followed by the Grade 1 Boys.  As well, before taking your child to the meet, you must stop by the school to pick up a t-shirt and a label with your child’s information.  If you prefer, you will be able to pick up the t-shirt and label the Wednesday before the meet (October 2) after school in room 39.  At the end of the meet, parents are responsible for transporting their grades 1, 2 and 3 children back to the school.  Parents are also asked to wash the t-shirt and return it to school with their child.

* If your child qualifies at the first meet on Monday, October 7th, he or she will return to compete at the South Conference Finals on Monday, October 21st and possibly go on to the City Finals on October 24th.  Typically, four to eight students from Brown make it all the way to the City Finals.

If you and your child are ready to take all of this on, then we would love to have you join us!

The practice schedule is as follows:

Practice Day:
Tuesday
Wednesday
Friday
Start time:
8:00
8:00
8:00
Division
Junior
Primary
Junior and Primary

Please meet the coaches in the playground five minutes before the start of the practice for attendance. Attendance is important because we need to know who is going to the race.  Attendance at a minimum of three practices is required, otherwise, it will be assumed that your child is not going to the meet and space will not be allocated on the bus.

There may be scheduling conflicts if your child qualifies for one of the school’s other teams.  That is not a problem. Your child will attend the practice(s) for their other sport and at least one of the cross-country practices. Please inform the coaches that your child is attending try-outs or practices for another sport.

The first practice is this week, Friday, September 13th, for junior students only (4-6).  The regular schedule above will begin the following week on Tuesday, September 17th. There is no need to sign up, just show up before the practice and check in with a coach for the attendance.

LUNCHTIME SPORTS INFORMATION
The Lunchtime Sports Program will get started in early October with our Flag Football League for our Grade 4, 5 and 6 students kicking things off. All students in Grade 4 to 6 who are interested in joining this fun lunchtime activity will have an opportunity to sign up during your child’s Physical Education class.

In January the Grade 1 to 3 students will also have an opportunity to join our Lunchtime Sports Program as we head indoors during the cold winter months and organize a variety of indoor games such as Dodgeball, Snow on the Mountain and Benchball to name just a few. Each grade will have a specific day of the week assigned to them for their lunchtime activity.

Once the weather warms up the junior students will finish of the year with a long-time favourite...Ultimate Dodgeball! More details regarding the Lunchtime Sports program can be found on the bulletin board in the hallway on your way to the Gym or by listening to the morning announcements.
