On behalf of the Parent Council, we would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new and returning students and staff. Parents are the school’s strongest input, and we encourage you to get involved in the school by participating in Brown School’s Parent Council. When we work together to support our children, our community of learners thrive.
Parent Council:
- is a collective association of parents, guardians, and staff who seek to work together to promote the well-being and effectiveness of the entire school community and thereby enhance learning;
- provides opportunities for parents and guardians to become more directly involved in their children’s education;
- facilitates cooperation among all concerned participants in the school;
- recognizes and respects the personal and professional rights and responsibilities of individual students and staff; and
- fosters positive relationships among parents, staff, the administration, and the community.
Magazine Fundraiser - We are seeking one volunteer to manage the magazine sales fundraiser this October. It will be a busy job for a two-week period, but this is an important fundraiser for Brown School. This fundraiser has been run for several years to fund Grade 6 activities, including the grad trip. We are looking to take the campaign to the next level as it is used as a key fundraiser at many other schools in our Ward. If you are interested, please contact Kelly Shaw at kellyahernshaw@gmail.com for more information.
On Tuesday, September 17th, at 9:00 a.m., we will hold our Annual General Meeting in the Gym. At the AGM we will elect the executive, receive the principals’ report, and review the financial statements of the previous year. Immediately following the AGM, we will hold our first Parent Council meeting of the academic year. We will hear reports from the various committees, hear about their plans for activities and events for the upcoming year, and discuss any new initiatives.
Parent Council meets every month, alternating between morning and evening meetings. After the AGM and first Meeting of the year, the next Parent Council meeting will be on Thursday, October 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the Library.
Also on Tuesday, September 17th at 8:00 a.m., Parent Council hosts the New Parent Breakfast in the Gym. All new and returning parents and guardians are invited to attend, meet other parents, the teachers, and Parent Council representatives. We hope you are able to make it!
If you want to learn more about Parent Council, feel free to contact either of the Co-Chairs, Nina Moritsugu ninatkm@yahoo.ca or Jenifer Glover jeniferglover@rogers.com.
BAKERS NEEDED
Calling all Betty and Bob Crocker's, volunteers are needed to bake this year for upcoming events such as the new parent breakfast on September 17. If you are interested please email Kelly Trainor at trainor@rogers.com.
NEW FUNDRAISING STRATEGY
Based on the information gathered from the Fundraising Committee’s research endeavours above, the Committee recommended the following changes:
- Reduction in the number of Fundraising Initiatives. Many parents felt they were being asked to participate in too many fundraising initiatives. As a result, there will be fewer initiatives that will be more clearly identified as Parent Council initiatives and differentiated from other fundraising programs in the school such as World Changers.
- Elimination of Underperforming Initiatives. Several fundraising initiatives have experienced declining revenues over the last few years. An example of this is the sale of Festive plants which will no longer be offered.
- Environmentally Conscious. Many parents felt strongly that they do not want to be pressured to buy “stuff” they do not want or need. Fundraising initiatives should be environmentally conscious and reflect our Eco-School certification. To reflect these concerns, the sale of wrapping paper has been eliminated.
- Keep it simple. There will be a reduced number of fundraising drives at Brown school this year. The main focus will be on the Fall Fling, the QSP/Brown School Magazine Drive and a new Annual Give campaign which will be introduced this spring and is in response to parent feedback.
