Parent Council News - June 2014

MESSAGE FROM JENIFER GLOVER AND NINA MORITSUGU, CO-CHAIRS
On behalf of the Brown Parent Council, we would like to thank all of our Parent Council and other parent volunteers for all the contributions made during the 2013-14, which ensured we carry on the many Brown School traditions which are aimed to enrich the experience of Brown School students.  The Fall Fling, Garden Fete, World Changers, After 4, Kiss 'n Ride, and Eco Committee, among others could not take place without the combined efforts of all our dedicated parent volunteers.

It has been a fantastic two-year run for both of us and we will cherish the accomplishments we achieved together, as well as the friendships that have strengthened as we’ve worked together towards common goals.  June also signals an end to the terms of many members of the Parent Council executive.  We have a number of important roles that we need to fill for next year, including our positions as Council Co-Chairs.  Brown needs you!

Fundraising Strategy
In May, we met with the Principal and Vice-Principal to discuss how funds that Parent Council raised were spent during the 2013-14 School Year.  We thank Principal Christakis and Vice-Principal Costa and the Office staff for their assistance in developing new accounting procedures to manage the flow of funds from the Parent Council to the School’s Non-Board Funds accounts, in accordance with new TDSB School Council guidelines that came into effect during this academic year.

Part of the overall fundraising strategy developed by our fundraising committee during the last 2 years has been to work with the Office to identify priorities or “buckets” of spending of fundraised funds which tie with the school’s identified priorities. The guidelines require that School Councils meet with the principals before the final Parent Council meeting of the year to identify the “buckets” for the following year, and set a plan. The plan was approved by Parent Council at its June 12, 2014 meeting.  The plan may be adjusted by the Office in consultation with next year’s Council Executive if circumstances change over the summer and priorities need to be adjusted.

We also wish to thank the Grad Committee for creating a wonderful graduation for the Grade 6s, and thank all the parents who contributed to the Teacher Appreciation Party that took place on June 23. Have a wonderful summer.

~ Jenifer Glover and Nina Moritsugu, Co-Chairs

FALL FLING
The Fall Fling Committee is looking for a Chair or Co-Chairs! With the 2013-2014 school year not yet over, we know it is hard to believe planning is already started for the 2014-2015 school year, but the Fall Fling Committee is already starting to form so that next year’s Fall Fling will be the best ever!

For those of you not familiar with the Fall Fling, it is a very fun evening in early November, featuring a silent auction full of hot items donated by local vendors, the community, parents, teachers and even students.  It is also a great opportunity to meet parents and staff.  All money raised from the event goes directly towards fulfilling the needs of our school.

So far the committee is made up of a great group of Brown School Parents including: Maggie Lane, Kristina McLaughlin, Jenifer Glover , Martha MacFayden, Andrea Yandreski, Darby Burger, Hilary Zimmermann, and MC Sutton.

The committee is looking for a few more volunteers to complete the Fling Team.  Specifically we are looking for enthusiastic parents in the following positions:
  • Chair or Co-Chairs of the Fall Fling (oversees the various Heads)
  • Head of Donations (spearheads the recruitment of donations from both the community and the Brown parent body)
  • Head of Ticket Sales
Traditionally the time commitment is one weekly meeting plus the time needed to fulfill the requirements under each position (approx. 6hrs/wk).

If any of these positions interest you or you would like to find out more about the positions or other ways you might be able to help out with the Fling, do not hesitate to contact us at mccall.marthae@gmail.com.

Thanks and be sure to mark Thursday, November 6th 2014 in your calendars so you can attend Brown’s major fundraiser – The Fall Fling!
