Sports Corner - June 2014

TRACK & FIELD
This year's Brown School Track Team consisted of over 40 students from Grades 3 to 6. Our first meet took place at Birchmount Stadium on May 21st and Brown School represented themselves so well. We had 22 students qualify for the South Finals and of the 22 students, we had 7 students qualify for the City Finals.

The Brown School coaches are very proud of all 40+ runners who battled hard at tryouts and at our early morning practices. We want to send out a special congratulations to our Grade 6 runners who will be moving on and hopefully continue running at their new school next year. Thank you so much for your many years of Track and Field memories here at Brown School.

GRADE 6 ULTIMATE FRISBEE
This year’s Grade 6 team participated in a one-day tournament that included teams from Forest Hill and Maurice Cody.  Despite our tremendous athletes, our one win one loss record was not enough to advance out of our pool and in to the playoffs.  We played hard and had fun, but realistically, the tournament date was the first time we’d ever managed to have our entire team in the same place at the same time.  We wish all the best to our graduating players and hope that they continue their Ultimate Frisbee careers next year in Grade 7.

GRADE 4/5 ULTIMATE FRISBEE
“A whirlwind tour!”  “A fantastic ride” “A nail-biting rollercoaster”

Those are just a few phrases to describe this year’s Grade 4/5 Frisbee team and their season.  A 2-1 record at our first tournament led to a 2nd place finish in our pool and a date with Old Orchard Public School in the playoffs. Things really clicked for our team against OOPS and great offensive flow helped carry us to victory and a spot in the South Conference Finals against McMurrich.

In the South Conference Finals, the two teams played each other very closely until Brown pulled away in the 2nd half for a victory and the title of South Conference Champions.

In the City Semi-Finals, held on June 9th at Flemingdon Park, Brown faced off against Armour Heights.  A quick score to take an early lead helped us greatly and we began to pull away as our confidence grew.  Victory over Armour Heights earned us a date with Rosethorn, a school from Etobicoke, in the City Finals.

What a match!  (We don't think writing about it can truly do it justice).  Highlight plays by both teams included a number of circus-style catches by Rosethorn and some fantastic long-bombs by Brown.  With three minutes remaining in the game, and trailing 5-3, Brown managed to score one point to make it close.  From there, we pressed and pressed until we punched in the game-tying point as the clock ran out which set up a 1-point, winner-take-all overtime.

Unfortunately, the overtime was exceedingly brief and anti-climactic given the drama that we had just experienced.  Overtime saw Brown get one crack at running their offence before Rosethorn scored the deciding point on their second attempt.

Congratulations to all players on their tremendous effort this season and on being crowned South Division Champions and City Finalists. While the coaches don't generally wear their sunglasses at night, they recognize that the future so bright they gotta wear shades.

GRADE 6 GIRLS SOCCER
The Grade 6 Girls Soccer Team participated in a one-day tournament on May 14th at Lawrence Hts. After winning their first game by a score of 3-2 against Palmerston the Girls then tied Maurice Cody 0-0 in their final game. Unfortunately due to tie-breaker rules, the team did not qualify for the playoffs but had a great day nonetheless. Congratulations to the Grade 6 Girls Soccer Team for your fine effort.

GRADE 6 WATER POLO
A big congratulations to the Grade 6 Water Polo Team who went to Keele PS on May 16th and participated in a one-day Water Polo Tournament. Brown School had 2 evenly balanced teams entered into the tournament. The team worked very hard during their lunchtime practices and their hard work paid off as both teams earned medals in the tournament. The Brown "B" team won GOLD and the Brown "A" team won SILVER! Congratulations to all of the players on a job well done.

LAST MINUTE OF PLAY IN THE 3rd PERIOD...
I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the many people who make the Athletics program at Brown so successful. We have a very dedicated group of teachers, administrators and support staff who volunteer their time before school, during lunch and after school to coach the several sports teams offered here at Brown. Thank you so much to all those who go above and beyond to help give our students an opportunity to be a part of a school team here at Brown.

Our administration is always very supportive and can't be thanked enough. A big thank you to the classroom teachers who put up with the numerous amounts of interruptions during the school day to accommodate students who have to leave early or get to school late for a sporting event.

Parents, we can't begin to thank you enough for your support. Whether it's driving your child, and often other children, to and from the games or getting your child up early in the morning to get them to a tryout or practice, the teacher/coaches really appreciate your support.

Finally, a big thank you to the most amazing group of kids ever...yes, the students at Brown JR PS have certainly earned the title "Best Kids Ever!". Your dedication and determination that is put forth in the Athletics Program is absolutely overwhelming. You've display great sportsmanship at all times not to mention "mad skills" at all your sporting events. The 2013/2014 TDESAA championship and finalist banners hang proudly in the school Gym...a total of 14 banners, absolutely amazing. Of course, there will be someone asking "14 banners, is that a school record?". Come by the Gym and find out.
