Physical Education Class

Each class from Grade 1 to 6 will receive 1 - 2 classes of Physical Education per week. It is extremely important that your child is prepared for Gym class by having the appropriate clothing and footwear. Wearing appropriate footwear (running shoes) and having comfortable clothing such as track pants or shorts, socks along with a comfortable shirt is important for your child to get the most out of the Phys-Ed program. Participation in the Phys-Ed program is worth half of your child's grade on their report card, so being prepared to take part in physical activity is extremely important.

I look forward to seeing your child in the Gym again this year! -- Mr. Profiti

Athletics program: a privilege & responsibility

Another year at Brown School is here - and that means the Athletics Program will be in full gear very soon!

Brown students acknowledge that it is a privilege and responsibility to be a member of a school team. Students are responsible for demonstrating appropriate and respectful behaviour at all times. Team members must also maintain classroom academic standards in order to maintain their position on a school team.

Lunchtime Sports – Flag Football!

Once again the Lunchtime Flag Football League will run two days a week (Monday and Thursday) with Mr. Macdonald and Mr. Profiti. Students in Grade 4, 5 and 6 who are interested in joining this fun house league can sign up with Mr. Profiti in the Gym during the last week of September. The league will begin in October and run through to the beginning of December during lunch recess.

Try-out sports

The following Sports Team will be available on a try-out basis this year at Brown:

All Students have received a package of blue permission forms that are intended to give permission for your child to try-out and/or participate on any school team. Whether it is the Cross Country Team or the Football Team or even the Badminton Team, the permission forms must be filled out and returned to their teacher.

If a child does not have their permission forms filled out they will not be allowed to participate in any of the try-outs until the permission forms are returned.

The first school teams that will be getting started very soon are the Football, Slo-Pitch and Cross Country Teams. The coaches had sign-up meetings for the Touch Football and Slo-Pitch Teams on Thursday September 6th and Friday September 7th.

The Boys' and Girls' Football Teams will hold try-outs simultaneously for students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 on Tuesday, September 11 and Friday, September 14, both at 7:30 a.m. at Winston Churchill Park.

Cross-Country Information

If your child wishes to participate in Cross-Country, you will find all the information you will need below.

As the parent of a primary cross country runner, here is what is in store:

Practices:

* Parents of children in grades 1 & 2 must accompany their children (or arrange for another adult to do so, not a teacher) and stay for the entire practice.
* Part of the practice will take place on the field in the school playground and a neighbourhood block near the school (bordered by Poplar Plains, Lynwood, Warren and Balmoral) which will be used as a running track on Tuesdays.
* Be prepared to help out.  We will need four parents to help supervise the four corners of the block.

The First Meet:

* Because the school buses can be a little unpredictable on the morning of the race, Grades 1, 2 & 3 students must be transported to the meet on Monday, October 1st by a parent or guardian.
* Primary students will also need to be supervised by their parents at the park.  Junior students will return to school with the coaches.
* As indicated below, the first meet takes place at Ashbridges Bay (Lakeshore & Coxwell).  The meets normally begin at 10 a.m. with the Grade 1 Girls followed by the Grade 1 Boys.
* As well, before taking your child to the meet, you must stop by the school to pick up a t-shirt and a label with your child’s information.  If you prefer, you will be able to pick up the t-shirt and label the Wednesday before the meet (September 26th) after school in room 41 (Ms Fox’s class).
* At the end of the meet, parents are responsible for transporting their children back to the school.
* Parents are also asked to wash the t-shirt and return it to school with their child.
* If your child qualifies at the first meet, they will return to compete at the South Conference Finals on Wednesday, October 10th and possibly go on to the City Finals on Thursday, October 18th.  **NEW:  As of this year, grade 1 students are participating in the first meet only. ** Typically, four to eight students from Brown make it all the way to the City Finals.

So if you and your child are ready to take all of this on, then we would love to have you join us!

The practice schedule is as follows:

Day 3

Please meet the coaches in the playground five minutes before the start of the practice for attendance.  Attendance is important because we need to know how many buses will be used for transportation.  Attendance at a minimum of three practices is required, otherwise, it will be assumed that you child is not going to the meet and space will not be allocated on the bus.

There will likely be scheduling conflicts if your child qualifies for one of the school’s other teams.  That is not a problem.  Your child will attend the practice(s) for their other sport and at least one of the cross-country practices.

There is no need to sign up, just show up before the practice and check in with a coach for the attendance.
