Brown Parent Council

The Brown Parent Council is gearing up for a fun-filled and exciting start to the new school year. We have a number of events and activities already planned to enrich the student experience at Brown! Thank you to the volunteer efforts of so many of our incredible Brown parents, who are essential to the success of these events and activities.

The Brown Parent Council invites all parents to attend a New Parent Breakfast on Thursday, September 20 at 8:00 a.m. in the GYM. This is a great way to meet and mingle with parents who are new to Brown School. The gathering will give “new” parents an opportunity to meet and chat with “old” Brown Parents, teachers, Principal Gina Christakis and Vice Principal Sonja Litner. Everyone is welcome!

All interested parents are invited to attend the Brown Parent Council Annual General Meeting, including the election of the new executive for 2012/13, which will follow the New Parent Breakfast. The AGM starts at 9:00 a.m. and will take place in the GYM. All interested parents are invited to attend the AGM to learn more about the school and to find out about exciting opportunities to get involved. The first Parent Council Meeting will follow immediately after the AGM. All parents/caregivers are welcome and are encouraged to attend.

 After 4 Programs

After 4 Programs are back for Brown students! We have lined up some great courses for the Fall session including Yoga, Swimming, Gym and Mad Science. Registration forms will be sent home with your child soon, and will also be available at www.brownschool.ca, along with more detailed program information. As always, admission will be on a first come, first serve basis – forms will be collected daily from the box in the school office.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Cathy Steiner at cathy.steiner@rogers.com.

Terry Fox Walk - Tuesday, September 25, 2012

On Tuesday, September 25th, all Brown School students and staff will be participating in the annual Toonie for Terry Walk commemorating the 32nd year of the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope.

Students and their teachers will be walking around the Brown School neighbourhood with their Terry Fox signs in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. Students will also be offered an “I am running for __________” sticker that they can wear proudly on their shirt. The Brown School Toonie for Terry Walk has raised approximately $9000 since September 2005.

Here is a breakdown of our fundraising efforts for the Terry Fox Foundation:
2005 - $1400
2006 - $1400
2007 - $1550
2008 - $1750
2009 - $1780
2010 - $895
2011 - $782

Thank you to all the Brown School families that have supported this great cause over the past seven years. All students are asked to bring in a Toonie to their classroom teacher, which will be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation. Our fundraising goal this year is $1000.

Scholastic Book Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school September 27th. Just in time for Curriculum Night! What better way to promote reading to our students than by supporting this important literary event.

We invite your entire family to participate by purchasing the latest and greatest in children’s books. Did you know that for every $10 you spend at the Fair up to $6 comes directly back to our school? Your support of this vital literary event is key in helping us obtain new books and resources for our library and classrooms.

You’ll find hundreds of quality books at our Book Fair with a wide assortment for all reading levels. Some French books will be available but the French Book Fair will take place in 2013.

We accept cheques made payable to our school. Visa, MasterCard and American Express are welcome, too.

Don’t forget to mark the Book Fair dates on your calendar! We look forward to seeing you during our Scholastic Book Fair and thank you, in advance, for supporting this great literary fundraiser. Mostly, thank you for believing in books and the importance reading has on your child’s future.

The library would also love to have Volunteers during the Book Fair.  We invite you to participate in this year's Scholastic Book Fair from September 27th to October 2nd by volunteering.  Please come by the library or send a note to your child's teacher if you wish to help.

Fall Fling - November 8th

Be sure to mark Thursday November 8th in your calendars so you can attend Brown’s major fundraiser – The Fall Fling!

It is a very fun evening featuring a silent auction full of hot items donated by local vendors, the community, parents, teachers and even students.  It is also a great opportunity to meet parents and staff.  All money raised from the event goes directly towards fulfilling the needs of the school.

If you would like to help out gathering donations or planning the fundraiser, we’d love to have you.  In any event, we really hope you will be able to make it to this important evening in the Brown School calendar.

Keep your eyes open for more information to arrive in either the school bulletin or your child’s knapsack!

Please contact Martha McCall (mccall.marthae@gmail.com) if you would like to know more.

Wrapping paper sale is on

The 2012 catalogues have arrived! Lots of new products, including jewelry and make up, will make this fundraiser even easier to sell this fall.

Take the time to offer the products to your friends and family members. The funds brought in by this event help the school by providing enrichment opportunities for our children.

Please join us to make the 2012 wrapping paper sales our first big fundraising achievement of the year.

If you have any concerns, please contact Laura Chorneyko at laubr@rogers.com or at 416-999-9225.

Outreach news

Once again, The Brown School Outreach committee will be supporting the charity Free the Children.

To kick off the year, a representative from FTC will be coming to Brown on September 24th for a special assembly for the Grade 5 and 6s.

Because of the exceptional work we did with this charity last year, we have also been awarded a workshop for 25 members of the Outreach committee.

Our dedicated Outreach leaders Michele Breslin and Anne-Marie Sulymko have also been invited to a Free the Children reception entitled "Evening of Champions" with the Lieutenant Governor General of Ontario. This is a real honour!

On September 28th, 13 lucky students will attending WE DAY at the Air Canada Centre. This day-long event has young people from across North America coming together to celebrate the youth movement for global change. Through messages from world-renowned celebrities, speakers and musicians, young people not only learn about a diverse range of current issues, they gain inspiration and knowledge needed to act.
