LIBRARY NEWS
Our Scholastic Book Fair was a success. Thank you to all the parents and students that made this event possible. We sold over $ 5,400 worth of books!

The Library and Learning Resources and Interdisciplinary Studies Department is very pleased to provide TDSB schools with a rich collection of online resources chosen specifically to meet K-12 curricular needs.

The school library website provides 24/7 access to online encylopedias, databases, e-books, and media resources from home, enabling students, staff and parents to access current, relevant, and reliable information for academic and personal use.

Some products are password protected during remote or home access and so each Brown student will be provided "learnmarks" a card which has all the logins and passwords. Also extra copies can be found in the library. We hope that you can use these resources with your family.

AFTER 4 PROGRAMS
Brown's After 4 programs are up and running! Our Fall session started the week of October 1st and will go until the week of December 3rd. Special thanks to Ms. Warden and Mme B'Dacy for graciously providing us with their classrooms. Your feedback is always welcome: please contact Cathy Steiner at cathy.steiner@rogers.com and Kiren Singh at kirenandrob@sympatico.ca.

WRAPPING PAPER AND CHOCOLATE FUNDRAISER
The deadline to place your wrapping paper orders is October 26. This is a very important fundraiser at Brown. The funds brought in by this event help the school by providing enrichment opportunities for our children.

This year, we are offering a pizza lunch prize to the class that sells the most as well as an iTunes card to the student who brings the largest order. Please, share the catalogues with family members, friends and neighbors. 50% of all the products sold reverse as funds to our school.

In case of any concerns, please contact Laura Chorneyko at laubr@rogers.com

OUTREACH HAS A NEW NAME!
It has been a busy start to the year for our World Changers. We re-branded Outreach to better reflect our efforts and participated in a day-long Free The Children workshop highlighting their Water Initiative - an effort at supplying developing communities with clean drinking water and all the ancillary benefits that come from that (health benefits, educational opportunities, etc.). A select few World Changers were able to attend the We Day Evening of Champions with Mme Sulymko and Mme Breslin where they were honoured by David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, for their previous fundraising and awareness-raising efforts (check out the photo with FTC founder Craig Kielburger!), and 13 Brown students joined some 20,000 others at the inspiring and enthusiastic We Day festivities on September 28 to celebrate youth leading global and local change.

In October, our World Changers group will be involved in activities to learn about hunger issues in our own city/country so that we can spread the message to our classmates, friends and families.  We are also creating a message board about hunger on the bulletin board in front of the office to spread the message.  Our We Scare Hunger campaign asking kids to bring in non-perishable goods to school as well as to collect them when trick or treating will be running October 22 - November 3 so please bring in your canned goods and ask your neighbours to participate too!

Below are a couple of excerpts from some of the letters each student submitted highlighting what inspires them to want to be a World Changer.

For those of you wondering what's coming next from the World Changers, here's an outline of our intended 2012/2013 fundraising and awareness-raising campaigns:

October - We Scare Hunger (food drive)
November - We Create Change (raising money for the FTC Water Initiative)
December - Holiday Hampers
January - Warm Clothing Drive
February - We Stand Together (aboriginal youth education)
March - Book Drive
April - We Are Silent

We encourage you to peruse the Free The Children website (www.freethechildren.com) for more information about their campaigns that we are supporting.

Please look for further updates and if you have any questions, ideas or suggestions, please feel free to contact co-chairs Allison Fortier <allisonfortier@rogers.com> or Laura Finch <laura.finch@me.com>. Our next meeting will be October 17 so if your kids are keen to get involved more regularly, please encourage them to join us!

Excerpts from World Changers' letters:

"I have been in World Changers (Outreach) for 3 full years and this is my fourth.  In that time I have learned different ways to help the world and people in need. If I get chosen to go to Me to We Day, I will try to inspire as many people as possible to come and help people all over the world who are not as lucky as we are." ~ Signe H.,  Grade 5

"I think the world should be fair.  If you just reach out to other kids you will see what a difference you can make.  I want to learn more about how I/we can change the world.  It's very important and serious to me.  I always think about it." ~ Natasha J., Grade 4
