LIBRARY NEWS

Our "Battle of the Books" novels are now available in the library. To raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family, ABC Life Literacy Canada created Family Literacy Day in 1999 as a national awareness initiative and is held annually on January 27.

Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children and young adults is crucial to development. Even just 15 minutes a day can improve literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.  Check out the Family Literacy Day website.  Here, you will find 15-minute literacy activities, online activities, videos, and literacy facts and statistics.  This website is also available in French.

French Scholastic Book Fair - Festival du Livre
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school February 6th and 7th. What better way to promote reading to our students than by supporting this important literary event?

We invite your entire family to participate by purchasing the latest and greatest in children’s books. Did you know that for every $10 you spend at the Fair, up to $6 comes directly back to our school? Your support of this vital literary event is key in helping us obtain new books and resources for our library and classrooms.

You’ll find hundreds of quality books at our Book Fair with a wide assortment for all reading levels. The French Immersion students will receive a Book Fair flyer that provides a preview of only a FEW of the many books available to purchase at our Fair. The flyer also contains a special Family Event Draw ballot that parents can deposit during our Family Event. You could win $50 in books – $25 for your family PLUS $25 for your child’s classroom!

Don’t forget to mark the Book Fair dates on your calendar! Le Festival du Livre will take place in the office hall the library on February 6th and 7th from 8:35 a.m. until 3:45 p.m.

If you can volunteer in the book sale, please send a note with your child or come by the library before the Fair.

We look forward to seeing you during our Scholastic Book Fair and thank you, in advance, for supporting this great literary fundraiser. Mostly, thank you for believing in books and the importance reading has on your child’s future.

Sincerely,
Marie-France Gagnon

WORLD CHANGERS UPDATE

All of Brown School joined World Changers in supporting our Holiday Hamper initiative through the month of December. Our social work team was blown away by the generosity of our school community providing families in need with everything from food vouchers and clothing to a new bike, toys, books and holiday decorations. Thank you to everyone for ensuring this holiday was a happier one for those families.

In January, we will be running a warm clothing drive from January 14 - 24. Bins will be located outside the office for anyone wanting to contribute gently used winter coats, boots, hats, mitts, long underwear or other cozy items. All donations go to students at one of our sister schools, JR Wilcox.

As always if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us at allisonfortier@rogers.com or laura.finch@me.com. Happy New Year!
