MAGAZINE DRIVE
Thanks to everyone who participated in the QSP Magazine Drive. Even though it is now over, Brown School continues to benefit from subscriptions purchased throughout the school year. As the holidays are approaching, please consider buying a subscription to a magazine as a gift of reading that lasts all year long! Go to www.qsp.ca to make your purchases online. Enter our school code # 9143 and make your selections. Your support is greatly appreciated!

WORLD CHANGERS UPDATE
World Changers continues to highlight issues of both global and local significance. Our membership has grown this year and we are delighted to see even more students keen to get involved at each meeting.

October: We Scare Hunger
In October, we talked about how not having enough food impacts people on a day-to-day basis – in developing countries and right here at home. Food bank use in Canada has increased 20% in the past decade and we determined to do our part to raise awareness and gather non-perishables for those who need it. Thanks to the generosity of all who participated, our school food drive was a terrific success! Our original goal of 1000 items was tripled and we were able to donate 2,162 pounds of food to the Daily Bread Food Bank. Well done everyone!

November: We Create Change
We Create Change is a penny drive to raise funds and awareness about the global water crisis. Each class at Brown will get a bag in which to collect their pennies – it takes just 2,500 pennies to provide a permanent source of clean water to one person in a developing country. What better way to get rid of all your soon-to-be-obsolete pennies?

Our penny drive will run from November 14 - 23. Roxy and some of the other World Changers have already saved up some pennies to contribute and will be giving presentations to classes throughout the school about why ready access to clean water can make such a dramatic impact in different parts of the world. Mme Breslin even organized a water walk where the students simulated carrying buckets of water on their head around the schoolyard. Let's see what Brown School can do to help transform developing communities by bringing clean water to them!

In support of the same initiative, we will also be selling Water Rafiki Friend Chains from 12:00-12:15pm daily from November 15 - 23. Each chain (which can be worn as a bracelet, necklace or anklet) is handmade in Kenya and provides clean water for one person for one year.

As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact the World Changers co-chairs, Allison Fortier <allisonfortier@rogers.com> and Laura Finch <laura.finch@me.com>.

BEGINNERS' MUSIC PROGRAM
Interested in an introductory band program for your child? The Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra (TYWO) in collaboration with Bedford Park Public School, welcomes students who have little or no prior music experience to participate in a new enrichment program to introduce instrumental music in a group setting. Under the leadership of Bedford Park and TYWO artistic staff, combined with personal instruction and mentorship by senior high school and university-level musicians from the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra, participants will receive hands-on coaching that will develop the skills and confidence of entry level musicians, supplementing the programs that exist within our schools.

This ensemble, to be known as the Concert Winds, will meet weekly on Wednesdays from 6:00-8:00pm at Bedford Park School, culminating in a performance at the Toronto Centre for the Arts alongside the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra on Friday, May 10, 2013.

Rehearsals will commence on Wednesday November 14th. Students should arrive at 6:00pm and may be picked up at 7:45pm. Parents and students are invited to pre-register by email to backstage@tywo.ca , or to call Beryl Macleod (Executive Director, TYWO) at 416-321-8996.
